VOCE 7622 – Green Gardening: Beginning

This survey course combines discussion, demonstration, and interactive exercises focused on resource conservation and pollution prevention in the landscape. The course builds on existing skills to help professionals create landscapes that are efficient, functional, and attractive.

This is the first course in a two-course series and is a prerequisite for Green Gardening: Advanced.

VOCE 7623 – Green Gardening: Advanced
25 hours

This course combines discussion, demonstration, and interactive exercises to develop detailed skills focused on resource conservation and pollution prevention in the landscape. The course builds on skills learned in Green Gardening: Beginning to help professionals create efficient, functional, and attractive landscapes and distinguish their services in a competitive market.

Prerequisite: VOCE 7622 – Green Gardening: Beginning

Sustainable landscaping practices can help conserve water, protect local waterways, improve plant health, and reduce landscape waste.

Topics may include:

• Choosing the right plants for the right location
• Water-efficient landscaping
• Irrigation systems and scheduling
• Soil health and fertility
• Mulch and compost
• Fertilizer management
• Pruning for plant health
• Integrated pest management
• Weed management
• Beneficial insects
• Pollution prevention
• Resource efficient landscaping

The Green Gardener Program is a Santa Barbara County training program for gardeners and landscape professionals. The program focuses on landscape practices that conserve resources and reduce pollution.

Training supports environmentally responsible practices such as:

Find a Green Gardener

Santa Barbara County maintains a public list of individuals who have completed the Green Gardener Program and choose to be included in the Public List. Community members, businesses, and property owners can use the list to find trained gardeners and landscape professionals with knowledge of sustainable and resource-efficient landscaping practices.

Participation in the public list is optional. Graduates who choose to be listed may be contacted by people looking for residential or commercial landscape services.

Renew Green Gardener certification

If you want to keep your Green Gardener discount card and remain on the public Green Gardener list, you must complete the renewal requirements established by the Santa Barbara County Water Agency.

Renewal does not require retaking the Green Gardener courses at ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒ. Instead, Green Gardeners complete a few hours of continuing education. Options may include approved videos, workshops, trainings, or eligible classes.
